The Hays Beautification Committee in cooperation with the City of Hays is conducting a Champion Tree Program within the city limits of Hays. The purpose of the program is to increase the awareness of the importance of trees and the appreciation of the current tree resource in the city. A listing of the largest trees of the various species in Hays will be made public so that residents can view these trees.

Only native and naturalized trees can be nominated for the program. Naturalized trees are introduced trees that can reproduce in the United States. Examples of naturalized trees are Siberian (Chinese) elm and Austrian pine. Nominations are judged on a point system. One point is awarded for inch of trunk circumference and one point per foot of height.

Your help is needed to locate and document outstanding trees in Hays. If you know of a potential champion tree, please bring it to our attention. There are 3 ways to nominate champion trees:

  • Call the Hays Park Department at 628-7375
  • Or you can fill out the printable nomination form, just click on the link.
