The Water Plant takes very aggressive steps to assure its customers very safe and high quality water meeting or exceeding all State and Federal regulations by running water analysis every two hours, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The City of Hays has the ability to withdraw groundwater from three different aquifers through 37 wells. The three aquifers are the Smoky Hill River, Dakota and Big Creek.
The Water Plant is capable of softening and disinfecting up to 6,000,000 gallons per day. The daily average is around 1,500,000 gallons.
There are four underground water storage reservoirs that hold 2,550,000 gallons of finished water. The City has two water towers for storage as well. The 1 Million Gallon Tower located by Sternberg Museum and the 1/2 Million Gallon Tower located north of I-70.
The water supplied to the City of Hays customers must exceed strict standards set forth by KDHE and EPA.
The City has 133 miles of water distribution mains ranging from 4 inch lines to 24 inch lines.
