Police Officers are paid bi-weekly. The Hays Police Department will provide its Police Officers with a step plan. Employees will be given a step on their anniversary month every year. Cost of Living Adjustments will be provided as needed.

Starting wage depends on an applicant’s education, experience & certifications. Lateral transfers are allowed.

Health & Dental Plans: Excellent health & dental plans are available for Police Officers & their eligible family members. 

Pension Plan: The City is part of the Kansas Police & Fire (KP&F) retirement system. KP&F provides retirement, death & long term disability benefits. The employee’s contribution is currently 7.15% which is refundable with interest if an employee terminates prior to retirement. Employees may also purchase life insurance for themselves, spouse, &/or children through KP&F. Visit www.kpers.org for more information.

Holidays: Police Officers are given 9 paid holidays. If an officer works on a City Holiday, they are compensated 2.5 times their salary. If the Holiday falls on an officer’s regular day off, the officer is compensated an additional 12 hours of hourly pay.

Longevity Bonus: After five years of employment, police officers are provided a longevity bonus each year. The bonus starts at 2%, moves up to 3% after ten years of service and 4% once an employee reaches fifteen years.

Paid Time Off (PTO): Police Officers use a paid time off system of leave. This should be used for vacation, sick leave, bereavement leave, doctor’s appointments, children’s events, etc.

Short Term Disability: The Hays Police Department is provided short term disability insurance that provides employees with 70% of their base wages while unable to work due to eligible medical conditions for up to six months following a 14-day waiting period. The City pays the full cost of the premiums.

Employee Assistance Program: Confidential counseling services are provided free of charge to employees and their immediate family. The website is also full of useful articles and legal documents.

AFLAC: Officers may elect optional AFLAC plans including: Accident, Cancer, Hospital, and Critical Care.
