An educational video showing actual footage of proper and improper traffic movements navigating the Hays Roundabout has been released. Find it at this YouTube link or the City's project webpage, www.haysusa.com/vine.
The project webpage also includes other information to assist motorists in learning how to navigate a roundabout. There are diagrams showing the particulars of navigating the hour-glass shaped roundabout at the 32nd and 33rd Street intersection. Here are a few tips to remember:
- Slow down when approaching the roundabout (advisory speed is 25 mph).
- Choose the correct lane
- If you are making a right turn (in other words exiting at the first side street) be in the outside lane.
- If continuing through (north or south on Vine), you can be in either lane.
- If you are making a left turn (in other words NB Vine to WB 32nd or SB Vine to EB 33rd) be in the inside lane.
- If you need to make a U-turn to head back in the direction you came from, be in the inside lane.
- Look left before entering the roundabout and yield to motorists in the roundabout.
- Don’t stop once in the roundabout (except to avoid an accident). Motorists in the roundabout have the right of way.
- Use your turn signal indicators to indicate a right turn onto 32nd or 33rd Street or a left turn crossing over to the east or west side of the roundabout.
- Avoid driving next to oversized vehicles negotiating the roundabout.
